AUTOMAKER BAILOUT WON'T HELP

let me get this straight:

1. The Democrats wanted the bailout
2. The Republicans stopped the bailout
3. The Republican President Bush gives the automakers a bailout
4. The Democrats accuse Bush of using this scenario to better himself.

Now I am not exactly sure when Bush stopped being a Republican and stopped being President. I am not even sure which happened first. I am sure that this was the worst mistake ever.

This shows you just how powerful organized crime ....... ERRRRRR... unions really are. They strong armed the gov't into given them money. The thought that they were big enough to affect the economy if they went under so why not use that to get some money.

I don't see how $13 billion will save them. It's still the same over paid under educated union workers running the show. All this will do is prolong the pain.

Now think about this. What smart American will buy an American car. We know they aren't doing well. So why risk buying a car from a company that might go under. Too big of a risk.

The automakers are still destined for the grave. No one is going to buy from them. It's like buying from Kmart. You know they are a dying company. So you stay away. Same thing will happen here.

Did you know that $10,000 from every car sold goes to the retirees of the auto union? Did you know that $2 billion a month goes to the retirees? Do you have any idea what a high school drop out's starting salary is working for the automakers? It's $28 an hour according to USA Today.

I go on record saying that I will never buy a Chrysler, Ford, or GM product again.

Snip:

When the new agreement is fully implemented, which should happen in 2010, the U.S. automakers would still bear labor costs of about $9 per hour more than Toyota, but that's far better than the current gap. The 2007 agreement also calls for a new two-tier wage structure and other concessions from workers.

Let's hope the automakers can't last until 2010. Maybe they believe this bailout can get them there. I think it would have been a great excuse to discard the unions and still pay decent salaries to the workers.

But what about the retirees? Just hang them out to dry?

Sometimes it just cost more to buy American, no, in fact, most of the time...unions are not the only factors...they can't be because not all industries have unions.

I am not against those companies, because they make good cars and they employ Americans. My husband works for a (whisper) FRENCH corporation, so believe me, I am not against working for Foreign companies.

It's time for the US to look at universal health care.

Also, why do rich people get Social Security benefits? It's ridiculous.

Toyota and the other foreign car industries that work in America do not have that many retirees yet, so how can you compare them to the US auto companies? It's just uneven, period. I don't know how you solve that, but it does not make the Big 3 evil, it's just the way it is.

My dh is from Macedonia (the former Yugoslavia)...and you know the one thing that drives him crazy? Seeing an older person (who collects Social Security) driving a foreign car. It's just one of those things that drives him nuts...and he is not even an American citizen (yet, hope to change that soon).

Well, anyway, those are my thoughts.

We are not evil people over here in Detroit, we are just every day folks trying to hold on to our jobs like everyone else.

Take care,
Bella

PS: I know I have told you this before, but just in case you forgot...my husband is not in an union. He's an electrician for a robotics company.

let's take your comments one at a time. your all over the place.

1. It cost more to buy American because our margins are bigger. I sell my bbq sauce to a grocery store. The store doubles the price and sells to the consumer. That is just pure greed to do a 100% markup. That's the American way. That's why American made things are more. It also cost more to live here and work here than in other countries. I can feed 100 people with $100 in a third world country.

2. Universal Health Care is not the answer. The answer is regulating the medical industry. When I am paying $15 for a wooden tongue depressor on my bill there needs to be regulation. I don't want Universal because that means the working man pays for the lazy man's medical bills including his drinking and smoking health problems. Not gonna happen!!

3. Rich people get social security because rich people paid into social security. What are you talking about. They pay more into social security than anyone. Why shouldn't they collect? Because there were smart and made a good living? Once again, you want the rich to pay for the poor and lazy. Trust me when I say there are a lot of lazy people out there out of work because they won't fip a burger. If my family needs food, I am flipping burgers.

4. Do you know what retirees get from non union jobs? Nothing. Pension is a word that will be pulled from the dictionary soon. It doesn't exist. Let automakers retirees do a 401k and lose money in the stock market like the rest of us. See you want health care to be fair across the board but not social security or pensions.

Forgive me, but what does dh mean?

As for people in Detroit, God Bless you guys. I don't want bad things for the working man which includes Detroit. I do however want organized crime like unions abolished. It's not right. The union does more harm than good. They have tons of money and they are definitely overpaid employees.

I love a good conversation. I respect your view. You at least stand up for something and that's better than not standing at all.

Oh, BTW I remember you telling me that your husband isn't in a union. My feelings in no way are toward your husband.

What can I say? I'm a socialist ;) lol

I do agree with you that I was all over the place though, I was typing and thinking too fast.

You remind me of my Republican friend, Adrian...he drives me nuts, too, haha and vice versa-but truth be known, they are some of my favorite conversations ;)

I do *learn* from others and that is what I like the best about talking to people with different viewpoints.

I have debated with my family my whole life. My mom is athiest (God help her), My one brother believes in God but is living a different lifestyle, my other brother is Athiest and very scientific (fact or nothing) and my real father is Jehovah's Witness (God help him too), and my dad who raised me is Agnostic.

Whew!

All my friends are liberal/democrats including all the ones on Facebook, myspace, linkedin, twitter, friendfee, etc.

So you can imagine I have some killer conversations. I do really give people their space. I tell them about God, I tell them how I feel about politics and if they don't agree then that's their choice.

You are truly a fighter. Dig that.
